The exterior seems the same.
On close inspection, not at all.
From deep within, a new visage surfaces and glows.
Metamorphosis.
Old descriptors no longer apply; something new is afoot.
Is it beauty, truly inner
Wisdom…Sagacity?
Is it acceptance
Understanding
Rebellion
Acquiescence
Or simply age
Can it really be that simple?
Age?
Can it really be this good?

I did it.
Made my case.
Spoke my truth.
Stood my ground.
Conquered my tears
And my fears
Shame, denial and disappointment.
Finally said what needed to be said
What yearned to be heard.
Deeply embedded in love.
Creating balance at last.
It was not easy.
But I did it.
I set Truth free.
I will heal.
It will be.

Balance.
Not as easy as it seems.
90% of brain function
is dedicated
to maintaining balance
in the human organism.
Just ask a chiropractor.
Equilibrium. Equipoise. Counterpoise.
Stability.
Literal balance.
Emotional balance.
Balance
between
…holding tight and letting go
…grace and effort
…give and take
…live and let live.
In the moment.
Balance.
Imbalance.
Imbalanced…off kilter…a little off…out of her mind…
Let’s not.

Did your dad where Levi’s 501s?
You know,
The original shrink-to-fit?
Big Frye boots.
Little man syndrome.
Big voice.
Little confidence.
Big mouth.
Little mind.
Heart?
Buried in fear and sorrow and pain.
Pain…
Stitches from a bar brawl.
Broken hand busting son.
Sore shoulder from swinging
The Belt.
“Thwack!” — “Thwack!” — “Thwack!”
It slaps through the loops
of the 501′s
every night
when he’s had way too much to drink
and comes storming…staggering… down the hall
because you and your sister are talking.
I cry before he gets there, knowing what will be.
Que sera, sera.
Whatever will be will be.
Did your dad wear 501′s?
I understand.
