“Behind all this, some great happiness is hiding.”
~ Yehuda Amichai
In the midst of the trial,
The tunnel’s length and breadth
Swallowed up its ending light.
Or did our anger and our grief
Destroy that, too?
In the dark, we clung
We to He
You to Me
Me to You
Fear of death
~ Worse yet ~
Fear of life like this
Stopped us in our tracks
And then
Pushed!
Pushed us
To push back, push on, push through.
Stubborn will, paternal fight, future’s-sight
Love
Were all we knew.
And they grew
Until
Thanks to the process? … luck? … good will?
We found the happiness.
Always there. Never gone.
Hiding just behind,
All along.

“push back, push on, push through”
Some days all we feel is resistance.
And the fear, “of a life like this.”
“A life like this…” carries a lot of weight, doesn’t it, V?
The biggest influence in individual happiness is ourselves. Abe Lincoln said “A person is generally about as happy as he’s willing to be.” But our capacity for happiness lies in the quality of our intermost familys’ relational dynamic. “Stubborn will, paternal fight, future’s-sight” is the test that spans the generations. Your words inspire me to remember to do my part for others, both young and old.
I have learned, too, Mark, that I am as happy as I choose to be. On occasion, the choice has to be very, very conscious! I’m glad you came here. I’m glad you shared, old friend!
Kim, this poem of yours reminds us how life can be…there are some dark moments which we can either come out victorious of it or fail to come out of it! But at the end of a tunnel, is flicker of light I believe which may give us inspiration to go on, til we can find the real true life and love amidst the constant pushing!
I’d say, it’s a very beautiful poem, well penned!
Thanks, Amity. I love that you got some deeper meaning and took the time to tell me about it!
sometimes we tend to look for what is not lost only forgotten. Nice poem Kim and thanks for stopping by.
Pleasure… and thanks back to you!
Fabulous. Very insightful. : )
Gracias!
and you make life exciting! just hiding? I’m sure it will come out and we will be dancing :)
:-)
Oh, I LOVE the ending! They found the happiness! Yeah! It almost seemed like a shape poem to me… like a bunch of arrows pointing them through the tunnel. :)
Yes! Yes! Yes!
masterful..
smiles,
Happy Rally.
hiding just behind, all along. I love the last lines – if only we saw these things when we were younger, eh?
One of the wonders and beauties of aging!
At the end of the tunnel happiness has been waiting all the time, very good thought!
Never giving up is the secret, but yet Kim, not all battles are worth the fight. So we need to pick which tunnel we want to dig through till the end… Loved your work.
Thanks, Sam. I see your perspective. Sometimes it is better to walk away, leaving the tunnel unexplored.
true happiness is something we all wana have..but we always seem tp push it away..
Lots of us do…
Speaks beautifully to life and how we are all the same.
Yes! We have much more in common than not.
A positive one! I believe that we can find happiness in little things in life. Many people don’t even notice or underestimate them, but they are there in each day. We should be open for them and they will come and bring a smile to us. Lovely write! :)
Could not agree with you more, Magdalena. Life is filled with precious moments to which we must be open, aware.
its got a very soothing lyrical tone to it..
Nice poem! Is the poem based on any incident which you had to face in your real life ? It has that power which only those works written from reality can achieve. A close-knit family is something which everyone doesn’t get! You are lucky to have found love and affection there :)
Part, but not all, of everything I write comes from personal experience.
That was really powerful! I’m awestruck!
I AM grateful.
So beautifully written Kim.
Thanks, Teri. Good to have you here!
‘fear of life like this…’ very good!
thanks, as always, Mary!
We must make a conscious effort – daily, sometimes even by the moment, to choose happiness, to choose joy, to choose love … to be content from where we stand! Bravo! becca
You and I subscribe to the same philosophy, Becca.
yes and we must find it before we lose sight of ourself.. nicely worded kim.. here’s mine.. http://fiveloaf.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/wedged/
Wonderful work. Happiness doesn’t always hide all that well but we tend to look for it in the wrong places. :)
We often do. I like to think that age, experience and wisdom gained enable us to have better radar!
i love this one. beautiful and powerful! thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I AM always happy when others feel this way about my work.
I think sometimes a trial is needed to bring out that love and happiness from hiding! Lovely words and structure to your poem, Kim :)
Here’s My Poem For Poets Rally
Trials that don’t kill us transform us … There is energy and conviction in this poem that I really appreciate. Thanks for another good one, Kim. Happy Rally days … Enjoy.

Yours is the most wonderful comment I’ve received in quite some time, Este. And it drove me to your site, where beauty resides. Your poetry has deep emotion as well as good construction. Such is often not the case. I will continue to read your work. And I believe you will, one day, decide that our are ready to embrace the happiness of which you are aware.
A lot of times happiness is right around the corner, but we fail to see it because we give up on looking for it. Well penned. I would have dropped a comment earlier, but for some reason your comment got caught by the spam filter on WordPress.
That happens sometimes. I’ve tried to rework settings and think it’s fixed. Thanks for your persistence, Panda!
