After I finished a novel replete with abysmal family dynamics and stultifying relationships, this poem popped up. Enjoy the image below and view many more, at Cheryl Dolby ’s site, Healing Woman.

Repel the fear.
Refuse the guilt.
Do not believe the lies.
No longer be
Held hostage,
Bound and gagged by family ties.
Shuck that burden.
Choose to move.
Not stifled, paralyzed.
Avoid that trap.
There’s much to lose.
Look forward, realize.
Choice and options, they abound.
Potential calls your name.
When blood’s a burden,
Wracked with fault,
Move to love, away from shame.
Recognize, deny deceit,
And shun complicity.
You’ve got to go.
Must choose to grow.
This is your destiny.

The first six lines are my favorite part. Affirmations and courage for those who need it most.
The first six lines flew onto the page, intact. The rest took some re-arrangement. Perhaps it should stop at 6. Thanks for reading, V!
Thanks for such a truth! I have had to follow my destiny, and I know that there are so many more who need to know that it is right for them, to get away from hurtfulness, and those who do not care.
Glad this resonated with you, Marta.
Your thoughts are so wonderful, Kim…often brilliant. I wish you’d experiment more with free form, or stream of consciousness. Sometimes your most powerful thoughts feel a bit inhabited by formality and form. I’d like to shake them from the rafters and make them dance naked in the barn to music they’ve never heard before.
I am on a margarita high. Forgive my silliness.
Oh, Jane! Dancing naked in the barn to unfamiliar music… I will formally contemplate that! ;-) Thank you for reading, commenting, playing.
Have spent considerable time reading from your site today. Great work…..pure truth….amazing pictures and paintings….. Fun to call you friend. You’re amazing but then that’s not new news to me. Thanks for sharing your brilliant mind. You inspire me as I work on my own writings.
Thank you for taking the time, Renelle, and for being so kind. If you ever want to share your writing, you know who to call. ~K
Good work, keep us posting, you are very good writer.
Forgive me if I duplicate myself. But I can’t see the comment I made.
I realy love this poem. So deep and true.
Thanks, Tigerbite. And thanks for your perseverance!
This is so true. We can’t blame everything on the past. We have the power to choose.
Absolutely we do!
This is fabulous and oh, so true! Blood should never hinder the the development of you!
Nor you!
This is really good…you captured everything….love the art.
Thanks for dropping in…
Pleasure, Reggie. Right back at ya!
Very true. I think we all feel bound by certain family ties. Thank you!
Not Me! Not any more!
like how it built up and ended. “You’ve got to go. Must choose to grow. This is your destiny.” well written.
appreciate that, Louise
choose to grow….love it.
Sounds so simple.
Is sometimes so hard.
But is always possible, an option.
This is so powerful! Imagine how many generations will be saved when one is moved towards magnificence and not in shame. Love it :)
That’s exactly what I think!
A great affirmation to be your own person!! So well written.
I really appreciate that last line!
I liked the way it ended with “this is your destiny”. A very positive message of self-growth and self-discovery displayed here. Bravo!
Empowerment!!!
Kim wow… My natural parents treated me well. They divorced and the insanity that followed wasn’t too pretty. I can relate.
God Bless :-)
Blessings to you, too, Scott.
Love, love, it!
Thank, thank you!
So many negative feelings here that are tamed with the ending. To grow ourselves we can’t let deceit and shame, guilt and blame grow in us.Bravo!
You have it right, Judy! Bravo to you!
love the message,
it is a waste of time to blame others, it is impossible to expect others to change their behavior on behalf of us, we must move forward, make progress,
divine entry,
A++
You’ve said it all, Jingle.
Industrial strength poem, Kim. We can think of more than a few who could do with memorizing it.
By the way, I pulled your comment (thank you) out of spam. That will happen often if you include links regularly. You might want to reconsider. You can depend on the old-timers in community to return your visits as soon as they are able.
Thanks for the heads up Jamie!
This is fantastic, Kim!!! I can almost hear this as spoken word. Bravo!
Gloria, you are very kind. It would be good for a reading, wouldn’t it?
I so love this. It’s so empowering and encouraging, Kim–bravo!
Thanks, Bodhirose! Empowering is the goal.
Kim, blood, or bloodlines, can indeed be a burden… or a blessing. I would not trade my whacky DNA for anything.
Love this take on self-determination and encouraging your readers to break out of the mold… and the moldy! LOVE IT ALL! “Move to love/Away from shame.” Amen to that, sister. Amy
I wouldn’t either, Amy, altough there were periods in my life when I resented it greatly. At this juncture, I see the wisdom in the plan and the path (if you want to label it as such.)
This is the story of my life…but it does get lonely away from the village still I am happier and much more peaceful, thanks for this beautifully expressed write :)
So much my pleasure! We creators have lots of common ground.
i think you did well on this kim.. here’s my potluck http://fiveloaf.wordpress.com/2010/01/25/paper-scribbles/
Thanks! I’m checking out yours this morning…
One word- Ethereal!!
Mind blowingly expressed.. only you could do this with this precision..
Hugs xxxx
You are too generous to me, Olivia, but I am very appreciative!
The dysfunction sounded really sad and was well expressed.
The dysfunction was really sad. The skills learned through escape, however, have been monumentally empowering.
So empowering! and liberating too. Loved the begining lines and the end about choosing to grow.written really well-must stand up for oneself sometimes.
Must stand up for oneself at all times!
Kim, I just came connecting to my comment! Indeed it seems like my mind! I felt as much while reading it the 1st time too! That’s exactly why I said what I had.. Seems some one read my mind from a close angle.. :)
Thank you for sharing this- because I read blessings in your words.. :)
Love xox
Thrilled that you do!
