In The Box
Mixed Media by Kim Nelson
Neatly
Packed away
Fitted into the clean white space
Space
You determined
I should fill
Independently
I bowed the walls
Expanded to a bold broad place
Place
I determined
I would fill
Sadly
Juxtaposition
Of expectations
Caused destruction
Expatriation
I
AM alone
Outside the box
Lost to you
Unexpected
Completely true
Can get quite deep thinking on what you have written…enjoyed :)
Glad you did enjoy, Adrian. Deep… I have been accused of that numerous times. :-)
brilliantly done again.the tension of being boxed and desiring freedom finely comes through.
really interesting look at the phrase….filling the space provided but then, seeking freedom and once outside the box feeling the loss…this is familiar and it is not always what we want once we get there…
You are so right, Brian… so right.
such sorrow here…sending hugs through the walls of the box.
Kim, I love that you are combining your art with your poetry! Sad poem really….I do hear that; but sometimes realistically I think it is better to be freeeeeeeee outside the box than trapped within.
Perceptive, Mary. Did write this from a sad spot. Not all of my work is autobiographical. This has a tinge of that. And I agree with you… it is far better to be free. Glad you appreciate my combining works as well. Seems necessary to me right now. :-)
Wondering whether the person is happier or sadder after reaching the outside.
Great art and powerful words, both beautifully packaged.
Tell me what the mixed media are in this painting.

Thanks for wondering. I wonder, too! And I appreciate your kind words about the art and writing. I know the art isn’t great, but it i a wonderful practice and release for me. I used high pigment water colors, permanent marker, clear acrylic glaze and an acrylic/wax blend for the box.
You are too modest: the balance in this composition is very pleasing to the eye.
Probably one you could use in many other ways with all sorts of texture.
:-) Thank you, kindly.
Beautifully written. I relate to the “juxtaposition of expectations”…….and the unexpectedness of the result. Yes.
This one goes so deep … lovely poem !!!
“Independently
I bowed the walls
Expanded to a bold broad place
Place
I determined”
Opposition, and therefore, once out, punished by exclusion. That totally sucks. And if that someone could do that? Unfortunately, if it is the world, and there is no where else to survive, we must stand by silently but persistently.
I AM is also a phrase used in the Bible for God; I AM outside the box is how I think of God, forever challenging our simple-minded lives. That’s just my take. As for your artwork, it is thrilling! Can I purchase a print of your work? (if it’s not too pricey… just the pastor and his mentally ill wife holding down the fort here…)
Peace, my friend. Amy
I sent you an email about the art work. Look forward to hearing back from you. I AM carries the same meaning for me. I use it a lot in reference to myself because I know I AM of God, by God, for God…
expatriation… yes. renewal, i hope. i love these phrases and i REALLY love that painting. wow, Kim, you are blasting outside the box for SURE. it’s exciting to experience, even from a distance. xoxo
Outside the box but complete true. Sometimes the price of being true self is, the feeling of being alone.
This is an amazing piece of abstract poetry, and so well complimented by your artwork.
Excellent! I loved the way put these thoughts so vivid……
Wonder crafted poem! You’ve got great sense of using words in such an elegant manner. Worth learning:D
