a decade here
another there
each time, place
necessary
now
the moment has arrived
to free
authentic me
and be

confirmed
my need to leave
here
lives of loves
were dashed
in spring
and now
now
I cannot smell the sweet acacia
see the lupine blooms
without recalling
death
and toxin’s spread
that comes with spring

Tanqueray and Perrier
with bitters, ice, salt rim
satisfies the evening yearn
when walls start closing in
turn the grill on
soak the shrimp
in lime and Sriracha
cook ‘em fast
eat em slow
desert summer’s
gotcha

I yearned to stay ’til fig season,
Reaped due of labors spent
Tasted ripe and succulent fruit
Learned again to be content
But
If I had stayed ’til fig season
I never would have left
And so
No tooth could sink into that flesh
