Soar, eat ether,
see what has never been seen,
depart, be lost,
but climb.
- Edna St. Vincent Millay

Like Vincent, Charles, Oscar, Paul, and Henri
I AM tempted to soar
~ surprising none more than me ~
Via Absinthe

Conservative, risk-aversive, straight-narrow, certainly
I’ve a craving for ether
Yearn to rise up and see
What’s never been

Fear of departure, lest forever lost
I analyze hazards
Consider all costs
Of climbing

And I choose

Vincent van GoghCharles BaudelaireOscar Wilde, Paul Verlaine, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec were all known drinkers of absinthe.
ether ~ a : the rarefied element formerly believed to fill the upper regions of space b : the upper regions of space : heavens.

Night
was not my friend
devoured peace
entangled

Night was when wicked came
with belt or beer-breath
void of shame

Night was when vile emerged
taunting, haunting
pushed to the verge

Night was when the options, poor
ran through my mind
dared me to unmoor

Night was when I’d pray to sleep
Eternally
Forever deep

Night

That was then
This is
Now

We are friends
Made peace somehow

I am free

Me

She has that unique quality.
You’ve seen it…
Up early in the morning; set to take on the world
Spring in her step, jiggle in her jog.
Fears nothing. Loves it all. Glides through the world, pure confidence.
How wondrous.

Transfixed by the scene in the kitchen unfolding,

The child watched the father’s hand pummel the wall

Knuckles, now bleeding, rode waves of cruel shouting

The mother, loud too ~ wild-eyed ~ red-faced did bawl

“Get out of the kitchen! Now! Go to your room!

This is none of your business, damned child!”

So he ran and he hid

Bumped his head on the bed

As he slide underneath it, half-wild

With fear.

Does anyone hear?

“Through here!”

“Come out of your shell. Release fear.”
