Herstory

Dedication
to education
evolution
transformation
could not negate
damage done
in early years

Preparation
for propagation
progenation
full fruition
could not baffle
torrents, waves
of fears and tears

Medication
for depression
therapy sessions
gave expression
to an elegant
inner countenance,
vision clears
I AM here!

It can be done.

It’s time, now
to get all truthy.
Women of my world,
hear this!

Education’s the key
get as much as you can
independence is what that’s about.

Attachments define
If life frees or confines.
Choose with wisdom,
in your future they’ll count.

Then give all that you have-
No condition.

The way that you treat
your beloved, those you meet
determines your path,
lessons therein replete.
It is true:
What you sow
you will reap.

Do what you must,
find delight in each day;
be grateful or find a way out.

Self-respect and self-love
Must be nurtured life-long
Learn why, when you’re plagued with self-doubt.

Know what it is that you came here to do,
then do it as well as you can.
Lay your foundation,
Add experience too,
one by one,
each a brick
in the temple that’s you.

Now worship.

“Some changes look negative on the surface but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.”  ― Eckhart Tolle

Beyond 50
the truth of mortality
the foibles of humanity
distrust, lack
infidelity
are far less important
that at 20

At 20
grandiosity
sparks dreams, conviviality
propels toward credibility
inspires efficacity
and the desire to achieve
before 30

Then 30
quickens domesticity
urges living proof of potency
encourages dependability,
home ownership, security
by 40

When 40
we foster equanimity
appreciate diversity
ponder our own divinity
while facing inevitability:
middle age looms ~
die
or live to 50

Suddenly
beyond 50
encourages felicity
prompts
search for tranquility
transformation individually

Toward grace, contentment, serenity
inner beauty, fulfillment, authenticity
balance, joy and flexibility

Ultimately

Trifecta, edited by Lisa Marie Harvey and David Moore, offers up a weekly writing challenge.  The only thing you can rely on is that it will be challenging; and it will somehow involve the number three.

Lisa and David recently asked those who participate in their challenges and contests to answer a handful of questions to share with others and build community. Usually I demure at such requests, but for reasons I cannot fully articulate, I opted to give this a go. So, here you are – my answers to these depth-seeking questions. Kim Revealed…

What is your name (real or otherwise)?

My real name is Kim Nelson, although I have also been published under the pseudonym, Kate McLaughlin.

Describe your writing style in three words.

Concise
Observational
Outreaching

How long have you been writing online?

Between my two writing identities, I’ve regularly posted online since early 2007.

Which, if any, other writing challenges do you participate in?

I’m on the editorial board and a regular contributor at Poets United. I also frequent Imaginary Garden with Real Toads and Three Word Wednesday.

Describe one way in which you could improve your writing.

I need to continue to write away from cliche. I want to convey familiar messages and meanings in a completely original way.

What is the best writing advice you’ve ever been given?

Just write. Every single day. Lock away the internal editor and write, write, write.

Who is your favorite author?

I read poetry, non-fiction, novels, spiritual and religious texts, short stories, essays, blogs. I read voraciously and have lots of favorites within each realm and genre.

How do you make time to write?

Writing has always been my most natural form of expression. I write. Simple as that. Now… making time for writing something that’s fit for another’s eyes is a completely different story. I usually plan my day so that I have a chunk of time calendared specifically for writing. Of  course, when I’m on deadline, my Type-A personality takes over; and I can forego nearly everything else to meet my commitment and make my goal.

Give us one word we should consider using as a prompt.

Become highly selective and discerning about the thoughts that come into your mind. Observe your mind. Who is it that observes? You. You are not your mind, your emotions, or your body.
~John Roger

Neither body nor the mind
Nor emotions do define
The miracles combined
To render you

Evolution, quite divine
Contoured your soul, refined
Your divinity’s been mined
God’s burst through

How utterly amazing
Are you?
