Joy and basil stacked

On wrought iron baker’s rack

Reminder: No lack

Dawn radiates through clouds, dreams

Waken to the gift

Two-and-a-Half Figs, Photo by Kim Nelson

Joy in the garden

This summer day

Rains soaked the desert

The birds flew away

And left for me three figs

*I have three fig trees which produce a fair amount of fruit. Due to the driest 6-months on record, local wildlife has raided my garden for moisture. But monsoon has arrived, and birds and rodents have retreated to more natural food and water sources. I bit into my first moist, tasty Brown Turkey Fig this morning. Heaven!

I wrote this poem after spending time in the garden. There, no creature envies another’s appearance or attributes. There, beauty abounds in every shape, size, color, form. There, we admire the diversity.

We, especially we women, can learn a lot in the garden. Every living thing is endowed with particular and unique beauty… you, me, she… We simply need to widen our vision, expand, accept, appreciate, relish.

I’m feeling especially divine.

That being said…

In my next life,

Next world,

I’m giving birth to six daughters:

Lily

Poppy

Rose

Iris

Daisy

Margarite

And they will be beautiful,

Each in her own distinct way.

Like their namesakes,

Those girls will lift their faces to the sun,

And bask in the wonder of the world.

They’ll add glamour and color, interest, allure

Wherever they find themselves.

With utmost confidence,

Each will embrace her particular uniqueness,

Not covetous, not envious, of other’s attributes,

Sure in the fact that she has exactly what she needs

To Be

Perfect

Happy

Free

Love

You were my destiny

To you

I offered the best of me

As a team

We made our own history

Now we grow on

Toward the mystery

Of aging and saging

Together.

What a freaking good plan.
